Overview

KG Mobility is the current name of the company most Australians still know as SsangYong — the Korean 4x4 specialist behind the Musso ute and the Rexton. The rename took effect in March 2023, so a used car here will almost certainly wear the older badge.

History

See the SsangYong entry for the full history — it is the same company. Briefly: roots in the Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop of 1954, the SsangYong name from 1988, a technology partnership with Daimler-Benz from 1991, and ownership passing through Daewoo, SAIC and Mahindra before South Korea’s KG Group acquired it in 2022 and renamed it the following year.

In Australia

The rebrand happened in two steps, which is why you will see three different badges on essentially the same cars. SsangYong Australia adopted a dual "KGM SsangYong" identity in September 2024, and the SsangYong name has since been dropped here entirely in favour of KGM.

The local operation has been factory-owned and factory-backed since 2019, with a national head office and parts distribution centre in Melbourne. The current range is the Musso and Musso EV utes, the Rexton, Actyon, Torres and Torres EVX, all carrying a seven-year unlimited-kilometre warranty that — unusually — covers commercial use. The Korando small SUV has been discontinued locally, with only dealer stock remaining.

Buying a used KGM

The badge on the car tells you roughly when it was sold: SsangYong before late 2024, KGM SsangYong through the transition, KGM after. All three are the same manufacturer and the same dealer network, so parts and servicing are continuous across them — do not treat an older SsangYong as an orphan.

Check the remaining warranty carefully, since seven years and unlimited kilometres is a long tail that transfers with the car, and inspect a used Musso the way you would any working ute: towing evidence, underbody, rear suspension and a service history that actually exists.
