Overview
Kindig-It Design is a custom automotive design and restoration shop in Salt Lake City, Utah, not a manufacturer with a model range. A car carrying the name is a one-off build — an existing vehicle reworked to a commissioned design — so it is valued as an individual car and its history is the build itself.
The shop works from a 27,000 square foot facility containing body and paint, metal and fabrication, final assembly and mechanical, and interior shops under one roof, which is why its cars tend to be finished to a consistent standard throughout rather than farmed out in pieces.
History
Dave and Charity Kindig founded the business in 1999 as a small family operation. It reached a much wider audience through the television series Bitchin’ Rides, which premiered on Discovery’s Velocity network in 2014, ran for eleven seasons and aired in 187 countries.
Dave Kindig’s own contribution is the design stage: translating a client’s idea into drawings the fabricators can build from. The shop runs 3D scanners and rapid prototyping equipment, but he has said his most-used tools remain paper, markers and a pencil.
Buying a Kindig-It build
Ask for the build documentation. On a heavily reworked car the paperwork trail — what the donor vehicle was, what was fabricated, what was replaced — is most of what establishes the car’s identity and its value.
In Australia, a substantially modified vehicle is assessed against the national code of practice for light vehicle construction and modification and signed off by an approved engineer. An imported build needs both import approval and that engineering assessment, so budget for the process if the seller cannot produce it.
