Overview
LA Exotics, trading as LAE Manufacturing, was a Californian replica manufacturer producing Cobra-style roadsters. Cars were sold in varying states of completion, including partially built and non-running, which is the single most important thing to establish about any surviving example.
Documented cars carry period-correct component choices — rack-and-pinion steering, four-point harnesses, a Hurst shifter, VDO instruments and power disc brakes — and are commonly titled to the year of the car they represent rather than the year they were built.
History
The company operated from Buena Park, California between 1993 and 1995 — a short run even by the standards of the American replica trade, which means surviving cars are individually variable depending on who finished them and when.
Buying one in Australia
A Cobra-style car is registered here through your state or territory’s individually constructed vehicle scheme, assessed against the national light vehicle construction and modification code by an approved engineer.
Because these were sold as unfinished cars, the build quality is the builder’s, not the manufacturer’s. Have the chassis, brakes and steering inspected independently, and confirm the engineering certificate describes the car as it stands.
