Overview

Lamborghini builds theatre. Where Ferrari has always been a racing company that sells road cars, Lamborghini has never had a works racing programme of consequence and has never needed one — its cars exist to look and sound impossible. The V12 flagship, the V8 or V10 mid-engined car and, since 2018, the Urus SUV are the three pillars.

Nearly every model is named after a fighting bull or a bullfighting term. The famous exception is the Countach, named for a Piedmontese expletive.

History

Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the company on 7 May 1963. He was already a wealthy industrialist making tractors, boilers and air conditioners, and the founding legend — that he complained to Enzo Ferrari about a clutch and was told to stick to tractors — is repeated so often because it fits the cars so well. His first model, the 350 GT, was a fast and elegant grand tourer.

The 1966 Miura changed everything by putting the engine behind the driver in a road car, creating the supercar template. The 1974 Countach, drawn by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, defined the wedge era. Sales collapsed during the oil crisis and the company went bankrupt in the late 1970s. Chrysler bought it in 1987 and sold it on; the Volkswagen Group took control through Audi in 1998, and the stability since has produced the most commercially successful period in the company’s history.
