Overview
Lancia is the great engineering brand of Italian motoring and the most successful marque in the history of the World Rally Championship — it still holds more manufacturers’ titles than anyone else, despite having withdrawn from the sport in 1992. For decades its road cars were technically ahead of everything around them.
History
Vincenzo Lancia and Claudio Fogolin founded the company in Turin in 1906. The list of firsts is genuinely extraordinary: the 1913 Theta was the first European production car with a complete electrical system, the 1922 Lambda introduced the monocoque body and independent front suspension, the 1948 Ardea had the first five-speed gearbox in a production car, and the 1950 Aurelia the first production V6.
Rally dominance came later and was total — the Stratos (1974–76), the supercharged and turbocharged 037 (1983), and the Delta, which won six consecutive constructors’ titles from 1987 to 1992. Fiat took over in 1969, and the brand shrank until it sold only the Ypsilon, and only in Italy. Under Stellantis it is being revived, with a new electric Ypsilon in 2024 and a return to rallying in 2026.
