Overview
Land Rover makes two quite different things under one badge: genuinely capable off-road vehicles, and luxury cars that happen to be able to go off road. The Defender is the former, the Range Rover the latter, and the Discovery has always tried to be both.
It is one of the few brands whose off-road capability claims survive contact with reality — Land Rovers are still used by people who need them to work.
History
The Rover Company launched the Land Rover on 30 April 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Chief designer Maurice Wilks had started the design in 1947 with his brother Spencer, Rover’s managing director; the brief was a simple agricultural vehicle to keep the factory busy through post-war steel rationing. It outlasted everything else Rover made.
The Range Rover of 1970 created the luxury 4x4 as a category. The utility line took the Defender name in 1990, and production of the original ended in 2016 after nearly seven decades. Ownership ran Rover Company, British Leyland, BMW (1994–2000), Ford (2000–2008) and Tata Motors since 2008, with Jaguar Land Rover formed as the combined business.
Buying a used Land Rover
Service history matters more here than on almost any other brand. Air suspension, electronics and diesel emissions hardware are the recurring cost centres, and a full history from a dealer or a serious Land Rover specialist is the single best predictor of what ownership will cost you.
On any vehicle that has genuinely been off road, inspect the underbody, differentials and driveshafts, and check for water ingress. On Range Rovers, exercise the air suspension through all its height settings during the test drive.
