Overview
Lexus is Toyota’s luxury division and the brand that proved a Japanese company could beat the Germans at their own game on refinement and quality. Its reputation for reliability and dealer service is the strongest in the premium segment, and it was years ahead of every rival on luxury hybrids.
The range spans the ES, IS and LS sedans, the RX, NX, GX and LX SUVs, and the LC coupe, with F badging on the performance models.
History
The F1 project — nothing to do with Formula One — began in 1983 when Toyota chairman Eiji Toyoda challenged his engineers to build the world’s best car. Six years, 60 designers, 24 engineering teams, 1,400 engineers and over a billion dollars later, the LS 400 was unveiled in Detroit in January 1989 and went on sale that September through 81 US dealerships.
It worked immediately. Car and Driver rated the LS 400 above the Mercedes-Benz 420 SEL and BMW 735i, and by 1991 Lexus was the top-selling premium import in America. The RX 400h of 2004 was the first luxury hybrid SUV from any manufacturer, and cumulative hybrid sales passed a million by 2016. The F performance line launched in 2007 with the IS F, and the carbon-fibre LFA supercar followed in 2009.
Buying a used Lexus
A used Lexus is the low-risk way into a luxury car. Build quality and mechanical durability are Toyota-grade, servicing costs are markedly lower than the German equivalents, and the dealer network is genuinely good at looking after older cars.
The hybrids deserve particular attention. The RX and ES hybrid systems are the same fundamental technology Toyota has been refining since the 1990s and have proven exceptionally durable; check the hybrid battery has been assessed at a recent service, but do not assume it is a liability.
