Overview
Lincoln is Ford’s luxury division, and since the 2021 model year it has sold nothing but SUVs and crossovers. Its historic identity was the quiet, isolated American luxury car; the Continental and the presidential limousines are what most people picture.
History
Henry M. Leland — who had already founded Cadillac — established Lincoln in August 1917, naming it after Abraham Lincoln, the first president he ever voted for, in 1864. Struggling with the transition from wartime engine production, the company was bought by Henry Ford for $8 million on 4 February 1922 and developed under Edsel Ford into Ford’s luxury arm.
A Lincoln Model L became the first official presidential state limousine in 1924, for Calvin Coolidge. The Continental began as a one-off built for Edsel Ford’s Florida holiday in 1939 and entered production for 1940, creating the personal luxury car segment. The 1998 Navigator, derived from the Ford Expedition, opened the luxury full-size SUV market and prompted General Motors to respond with the Escalade.
