Overview
The London Coach Company sold a London-taxi-shaped vehicle into the American market in the mid-1980s, badged the Sterling limousine. The bodies were built in Coventry by Carbodies — the firm that made London’s FX-series taxis — so the car is a genuine London cab shell rather than a lookalike.
The mechanical package was Americanised. Where the London taxi ran a diesel, the Sterling used a 2.3-litre Ford petrol engine, chosen because diesel had little following among American private buyers at the time.
History
The company was formed in 1984 by a British parent that had spotted the gap left in the American market when Checker Motors stopped building taxis in 1982. All Sterlings were built in 1985 or 1986.
How many were made is genuinely disputed, with sources arguing for somewhere between 50 and 100 United States-specification cars. Either figure makes it a very rare vehicle, and one whose parts split awkwardly between British body components and American mechanical ones.
