Overview
Lucid builds the most efficient electric cars on sale, and it does so because it started as a battery and powertrain supplier rather than a car company. The Air sedan holds the EPA range record at 520 miles for the Dream Edition — a figure achieved through motor and inverter efficiency rather than simply a bigger pack.
History
Founded in 2007 as Atieva by Bernard Tse, Sam Weng and Sheaupyng Lin, supplying batteries — including, for several seasons, every car on the Formula E grid. It was renamed Lucid Motors in October 2016 after Peter Rawlinson, chief engineer of the Tesla Model S, joined as chief technology officer.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund became the majority shareholder in April 2019 and holds roughly 58 per cent. Air production began in September 2021 at a purpose-built $700 million plant at Casa Grande, Arizona, and the Gravity SUV followed in December 2024. Volumes remain small and losses large.
