Overview
Maserati sits between the luxury grand tourer and the outright sports car, and its defining characteristic has always been noise — Maserati engines sound like nothing else, and the company knows it. The current range is the MC20 supercar, the Grecale SUV and the GranTurismo and GranCabrio grand tourers.
History
Alfieri Maserati founded the company in Bologna on 1 December 1914, with four of his brothers involved. The trident badge, designed by Mario Maserati, comes from Neptune’s trident on the fountain in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore. The company moved to Modena in 1940.
The racing record is genuinely distinguished: back-to-back Indianapolis 500 wins in 1939 and 1940 — still the only Italian manufacturer to do it — and Juan Manuel Fangio’s 1957 Formula One World Championship in the 250F. The brothers sold out to the Orsi family in 1937, and ownership then ran Citroën (1968), De Tomaso and the Italian state (1975), Fiat (1993) and now Stellantis.
Buying a used Maserati
Depreciation on Maseratis is severe, which is both the opportunity and the warning. A Ghibli or Levante can be bought for a fraction of its original price, but the running costs do not depreciate with it — servicing, tyres and brakes are priced as exotica.
