Overview
Maybach is Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-luxury sub-brand, applied to extended, more opulent versions of the S-Class and GLS. It is the third distinct life of a name that began in aviation.
History
Wilhelm Maybach — Gottlieb Daimler’s long-time collaborator and one of the genuine pioneers of the motor car — founded the company with his son Karl in 1909 to build engines for Zeppelin airships, then railcars. Around 1,800 automobiles were produced between 1921 and 1940, and they are now regarded as among the finest cars of the era.
Automotive production never resumed after the Second World War. Daimler revived the name in 2002 as a standalone brand with the Maybach 57 and 62, but sold only around 3,000 cars in a decade and discontinued it in 2012. The current approach — a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz rather than a rival to Rolls-Royce — began in 2015 and has been far more successful, with 21,600 sales in 2022 and particular strength in China.
