Overview
McLaren applies Formula One engineering practice to road cars more literally than any rival. Every model is built around a carbon-fibre monocoque, the company has never made an SUV, and the chassis and hydraulic suspension engineering is regarded as the class benchmark.
The range is tiered: Sports Series, GT, Super Series and the limited Ultimate Series, with the hybrid Artura and the W1 the current technical showcases.
History
Bruce McLaren founded the racing team in 1963 and died testing a prototype at Goodwood in 1970. Ron Dennis established McLaren Cars in 1985, and the result was the F1 — 106 built between 1992 and 1998, the first road car with a carbon-fibre monocoque, and the fastest naturally aspirated production car ever made.
McLaren Automotive relaunched as a separate volume manufacturer in 2010, with the MP4-12C arriving in 2011. Ownership passed to Abu Dhabi’s CYVN Holdings, which took full control in March 2025 and merged the company with the electric vehicle start-up Forseven the following month.
