Overview
Mercury was Ford’s mid-tier brand for seven decades, positioned between a Ford and a Lincoln. It was killed in 2011 for the reason most such brands die: the gap it filled had closed, and buyers stopped seeing the difference.
History
Edsel Ford created Mercury in November 1938 explicitly to bridge the gap between the Ford and Lincoln model lines, launching with four body styles of the Mercury Eight. The 1949–51 Eight, particularly as a two-door, became a hot rod and custom icon and appeared in several films.
The Cougar of 1967 slotted between the Mustang and the Thunderbird, and the Grand Marquis of 1975 became the brand’s long-running full-size luxury car. Sales peaked at nearly 670,000 in 1979, and Mercury was America’s fifth-best-selling brand in 1983. By 2009 it held one per cent of the North American market; Ford announced closure on 2 June 2010 and the last car, a 2011 Grand Marquis, was built on 4 January 2011.
