Overview
MG is two quite different companies sharing one octagon badge, and an Australian used-car search will return both. The historic MG built small, affordable, open British sports cars — the MGA, MGB and Midget. The current MG, owned by China’s SAIC, builds value-priced hatchbacks, SUVs and electric cars, and was Australia’s tenth best-selling brand in 2025 with 41,298 sales.
Treating them as one continuous company would be misleading. They are best understood as a revived badge rather than an unbroken business.
History
MG began inside Morris Garages, William Morris’s Oxford dealership, where manager Cecil Kimber built sportier versions of Morris cars. The octagon was registered as a trademark on 1 May 1924, a formal company followed in 1930, and the Abingdon factory opened in 1929. Under BMC from 1952 came the MGA (1955) and the MGB (1962), which sold in huge numbers to export markets and defined the affordable British roadster.
Abingdon was closed on 24 October 1980 in a round of British Leyland cutbacks, and MG became a badge applied to Austin Rover saloons. After MG Rover went into receivership in 2005, Nanjing Automobile bought the marque; it passed to SAIC Motor in 2007. By 2022 MG Motor was the fastest-growing car brand in the United Kingdom, and the ZS crossover leads its global sales.
Buying a used MG
For a modern MG — MG3, ZS, HS, MG4 — the warranty is the main event. MG has competed hard on long warranty terms in Australia, and the balance transfers to you if the car has been serviced on schedule, so check the book first. Depreciation is steep, which is the second-hand buyer’s gain.
For a classic MGB or Midget, this is a rust inspection: sills, floors, rear spring hangers and the area around the front suspension mounts. Parts supply from British specialists is outstanding and the cars are simple to work on, so a sound shell in poor cosmetic condition is usually a better buy than a tidy car over bad structure.
