Mitsubishi’s reputation in Australia rests on tough, no-nonsense vehicles sold with long warranties — the Triton ute, the Outlander and the Pajero Sport. It finished sixth among all brands in 2025 with 61,198 sales.

The enthusiast half of the story is all-wheel drive: the Lancer Evolution and the Pajero built one of the most decorated competition records in the business.

History

Mitsubishi’s automotive history begins in 1917 with the Model A, Japan’s first series-production car, but Mitsubishi Motors was only established as a separate company on 22 April 1970, as a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It reached a million cars a year by 1980 and entered the US market in 1982 through a Chrysler partnership.

The competition record is remarkable: 12 Dakar Rally victories, more than any other manufacturer, and a WRC manufacturers’ title in 1998 with the Lancer Evolution. Nissan acquired a 34 per cent controlling stake in October 2016, bringing Mitsubishi into the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Mitsubishi bought Chrysler’s Australian operations in 1980 and built cars at Tonsley Park in Adelaide — the Sigma, the Magna and finally the 380 — until the plant closed on 31 March 2008, costing between 700 and 1,000 direct jobs. The brand has traded here as an importer since, and remains one of the strongest performers in the ute and mid-size SUV segments.

Buying a used Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi’s long capped-price servicing and warranty programmes mean recent used cars often arrive with substantial factory cover remaining — but that cover is conditional on servicing having been done at the specified intervals, so read the book before you negotiate.

On a used Triton or Pajero Sport, check for towing and off-road wear the same way you would on any working four-wheel drive. Lancer Evolution models are now collectible and frequently modified; verify originality and check for track use.
