Overview
MK Sportscars, of Maltby in Rotherham, is one of the larger names at the affordable end of Britain’s Lotus Seven-inspired roadster scene. Its best-known car is the MK Indy, a Seven-style roadster built on the Locost principle — a light, simple, spaceframe two-seater assembled largely from mass-production parts.
The Indy’s donor is the Ford Sierra, which supplies the differential and driveshafts for its independent rear suspension along with the front hubs and steering rack. That is the whole point of the design: parts that are cheap, available and understood.
History
The company began by supplying chassis and suspension components to Locost builders before developing its own roadster, with Indy production starting in 1997 and the car established by 2000. Later cars moved to Mazda MX-5 running gear, and the range has taken high-performance VTEC engines and 1000cc superbike engines as well as the original Ford units.
The MK Indy project was later sold to Kit Car Direct in Essex, a firm that had supplied MK Sportscars with parts and services for years.
Buying one in Australia
A Seven-style roadster is registered here as an individually constructed vehicle, assessed against the national light vehicle construction and modification code and certified by an approved engineer. That certificate is the document that makes the car registrable, so confirm it exists and matches the car in front of you.
Ask what the donor is. A Sierra-based Indy and an MX-5-based one share a shape and very little else, and the answer determines what you can service locally.
