Overview

Nissan covers an unusually wide spread: the workhorse Navara ute and Patrol four-wheel drive at one end, the X-Trail and Qashqai in the middle, and the GT-R and Z at the other. Few mainstream brands maintain a serious halo performance line, and Nissan has done it for decades.

It also holds a genuine first in electrification — the Leaf, launched in 2010, was the world’s best-selling plug-in electric car for most of the following decade.

History

The lineage starts with Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works on 1 July 1911 and the DAT car of 1914, named for the initials of its backers. Nissan Motor Company itself was founded on 26 December 1933, and used Datsun as its export brand until the mid-1980s.

The Datsun 240Z of 1969 is the car that made Nissan world-class — a genuinely fast, genuinely beautiful sports car at a price that embarrassed Europe. The Skyline came in through the 1966 merger with Prince Motor Company and evolved into the GT-R. A near-collapse in the late 1990s brought Renault in as a partner in 1999, with Carlos Ghosn arriving as CEO in 2001; Mitsubishi joined the alliance in 2016.

Buying a used Nissan

The main thing to check on used Nissans is the CVT automatic fitted to many X-Trail, Qashqai and Pulsar models. It is not a bad transmission when the fluid has been changed on schedule, but it is expensive when it fails — so look for evidence of transmission servicing, not just engine oil changes.

Patrol and Navara buy the same way as any other working four-wheel drive: underbody, towing evidence, service history. Skyline, 300ZX, 350Z and GT-R models are enthusiast cars now — check for modification quality and track use, and expect to pay for originality.
