Overview
Oldsmobile was America’s first volume carmaker and, for most of its 107 years, General Motors’ engineering-led division. It produced more than 35 million vehicles before it was shut down in 2004.
History
Ransom E. Olds founded the company in 1897. The Curved Dash of 1902–07 was the first mass-produced car, built on a progressive moving assembly line more than a decade before Ford’s Highland Park operation.
The technical firsts kept coming: the first fully automatic transmission in the 1940 Hydra-Matic, the overhead-valve Rocket V8 of 1949 that effectively began the horsepower race, the first turbocharged production engine in 1962, and the Toronado of 1966, America’s first mass-produced front-wheel-drive car and Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. The Cutlass was North America’s best-selling car by 1976, and sales topped a million a year from 1983 to 1986. Pressure from Lexus and Acura eroded the division’s position, GM announced closure in December 2000, and the last car was built on 29 April 2004.
