Overview
Opel is Germany’s mainstream carmaker — the Astra, Corsa and Insignia are its familiar products — and it matters to Australians for an indirect reason: for decades, a great many Holdens were Opels underneath. The Astra, Vectra, Barina and several Commodore generations trace directly to Rüsselsheim engineering.
History
Adam Opel founded the company in Rüsselsheim on 21 January 1862 to build sewing machines, adding bicycles in 1886 and the first car in 1899. General Motors took an 80 per cent stake in 1929 and full control by 1931, holding the business until 2017. By 1935 Opel was the first German manufacturer to build more than 100,000 vehicles a year.
Opel models were rebadged worldwide — as Vauxhall in Britain, Holden in Australia, and Buick, Chevrolet, Saturn and Cadillac in North America. PSA Group bought the company for around $2.2 billion in 2017, and it has been part of Stellantis since 2021.
