Overview
Panoz is a small Georgia-based maker of front-engined, aluminium-chassis sports cars, best known for taking a deeply unfashionable engineering layout into professional endurance racing and winning with it.
History
Dan Panoz founded the company in 1989 at Hoschton, Georgia. The Roadster and AIV Roadster came first, followed by the Esperante. Racing began in 1997, and the front-engined LMP-1 Roadster-S of 1999 and LMP07 of 2001 were among the few serious attempts to challenge mid-engined prototypes at that level.
The high point came in 2006, when an Esperante GTLM won the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Panoz Motor Sports Group — including the American Le Mans Series — was sold to NASCAR in 2012; the car manufacturing business remains family-owned.
