Overview
Panther Westwinds built retro-styled British specials on other manufacturers’ mechanicals — and, once, a six-wheeled twin-turbo convertible that had no purpose whatsoever beyond existing.
History
Robert Jankel founded the company in Surrey in 1972 with the J72, a Jaguar-powered pastiche of the SS100. The Rio of 1975 was a Triumph Dolomite finished to Rolls-Royce standards at roughly three times a Dolomite’s price. The fibreglass-bodied Lima ran from 1976 to 1982, and the Panther 6 — six wheels, two of them steering — was built exactly twice in 1977–78.
The original company collapsed in 1980 and was bought by Young Chull Kim, under whom the Kallista was produced from 1982. SsangYong acquired the business in 1987 and production ended in 1990. Jankel bought the Panther name back in 2001 and was working on a new sports car when he died in 2005.
