Overview
Peugeot is the oldest surviving car company in the world and has been building things since 1810. Its speciality is the small and mid-size hatchback with unusually good ride quality — and, periodically, a hot hatch that redefines the class.
The lion emblem predates the cars by three decades: it was adopted in 1858 to advertise saw blades.
History
The Peugeot family business started in 1810 at Valentigney, making steel, saws and hand tools. Armand Peugeot built a steam tricycle in 1889 and a petrol car using a Panhard-Daimler engine in 1890; Automobiles Peugeot was formally established in 1896.
The competition record is one of the broadest in motorsport: Indianapolis 500 wins in 1913, 1916 and 1919; five World Rally Championship titles across the 205 T16 and 206 eras; seven Dakar Rally victories; and three outright wins at Le Mans. The 205 of 1983 — and the 205 GTI in particular — turned the company’s fortunes around. PSA Peugeot Citroën formed in 1976, and merged with Fiat Chrysler in January 2021 to create Stellantis.
