About these listings

Overview

Phoenix Motorcars builds light and medium-duty electric vehicles for fleet and transit operators — shuttle buses, flatbeds, work trucks and school buses — from a base in Anaheim, California. It is a commercial-vehicle manufacturer, so a Phoenix in a classifieds listing is a working vehicle rather than a passenger car.

The company’s core competence is the electric drivetrain itself, which it has been developing for over twenty years and integrates into its own vehicles.

History

Founded in 2002, Phoenix became a wholly owned subsidiary of Al Yousuf LLC in 2009 and of EdisonFuture in 2020. It launched its first electric drivetrain in 2009, put a 14 to 22 passenger electric shuttle bus with a 100-mile range into service in 2013 on a Ford E350/450 base, and sold its first Class 4 electric vehicle in 2014.

In November 2023 Phoenix acquired the electric transit bus division and associated battery leases of the bankrupt bus maker Proterra for 10 million dollars, folding two decades of zero-emission transit bus design into its own portfolio.
