Overview

Pininfarina is the most celebrated car design house in the world, and for 61 years it drew almost every road-going Ferrari. It is a design and engineering consultancy rather than a carmaker, though it built bodies in volume for decades and now lends its name to an electric hypercar brand.

History

Battista "Pinin" Farina founded the firm on 23 May 1930 with 18 employees, building 50 bodies in the first year. By 1939 it employed 400 people and built 150 a month, before Allied bombing destroyed the factory. The postwar Cisitalia 202 of 1947 re-established its reputation — the Museum of Modern Art in New York displayed one as sculpture.

A 1951 meeting between Battista Farina and Enzo Ferrari began the defining relationship in car design; Pininfarina styled nearly every road Ferrari until the F12berlinetta in 2012. The family name was formally changed to Pininfarina in 1961. India’s Mahindra Group acquired 76 per cent of the company in December 2015, and it now employs over 700 people designing everything from cars to trains, yachts and buildings.
