Overview
Plymouth was Chrysler’s low-price brand and, for decades, one of America’s "low-priced three" alongside Chevrolet and Ford. Its muscle cars — the Road Runner, the Barracuda, the winged Superbird — are what the name means to enthusiasts now.
History
Introduced at Madison Square Garden on 7 July 1928 as Chrysler’s entry into the low-price market. It reached third place in US sales by 1931 and came close to overtaking Ford in 1940–41; production peaked at 973,000 cars in 1973.
The performance era gave the brand its legends: the stripped-down Road Runner (1968–75), the Barracuda pony car (1964–74) and the aerodynamically absurd Superbird of 1970. By the 1990s badge-engineering with Dodge and Chrysler had hollowed out its identity. The brand was discontinued on 29 June 2001, with the last car — a Neon — built the day before at Belvidere.
