Overview
Polestar makes electric cars with Volvo engineering underneath and a deliberately austere Scandinavian design language on top — minimal chrome, minimal badging, no wood. The Polestar 2 is the volume car; the 3 and 4 are SUVs.
It is asset-light by design, building its cars in existing Volvo and Geely plants rather than running its own factories.
History
The name began as Flash Engineering, a Swedish touring car team founded in 1996, rebranded Polestar Racing in 2005. It ran a Volvo tuning division on the side, and Volvo bought the company outright in July 2015.
In October 2017 Volvo and Geely announced that Polestar would become a standalone electric brand; the racing operation was spun off as Cyan Racing. The carbon-bodied Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid ran from 2019 to 2022, and the company listed on Nasdaq in June 2022.
