Overview

Porsche occupies a unique position: a luxury brand whose products are engineered first as driver’s cars. The 911 is the longest-running sports car success story in the world, and the Cayenne and Macan carry genuine Porsche dynamics into family duty. In Australia the brand enjoys a passionate owner community and one of the strongest resale records of any marque.

The Taycan proved the engineering translates to electric drive; the 718 Boxster and Cayman remain the mid-engined entry point.

History

Ferdinand Porsche founded the firm in Stuttgart in 1931 with Adolf Rosenberger and Anton Piëch, initially as a design and engineering consultancy rather than a carmaker — its first major project was the Volkswagen Beetle. The first car to carry the name was the 356, road-certified in 1948 and built initially at Gmünd in Austria, using an air-cooled rear-engine layout closely related to the Beetle.

The 911 arrived in 1964, designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander. It was originally to be called the 901, but Peugeot held the rights to three-digit names with a zero in the middle. Porsche and Volkswagen agreed to merge in 2009, and Porsche AG is now a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG while Porsche SE, the family holding company, controls VW in turn.

Buying a used Porsche

A used Porsche is more attainable than most people assume. Macans and Cayennes depreciate like other luxury SUVs, putting them within reach of mainstream-SUV budgets after a few years, while the 911 depreciates slowly and certain variants — GTS, GT3, manual-equipped cars — can appreciate. Options matter enormously to value: sports exhaust, PASM adaptive suspension and Sport Chrono all lift desirability.

Buy with history, always. A documented service record from a Porsche centre or recognised specialist, plus a pre-purchase inspection, is standard practice with this brand. Cared-for Porsches are famously long-lived — many 911s wear six-figure odometers with pride.
