Ram builds full-size American pickups and vans, and since splitting from Dodge it has concentrated on that alone. The 1500 is the flagship; the 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks with Cummins diesel power are what Australians buying for towing usually want.

History

The Ram name appeared on Dodge pickups from 1981 — the ram’s-head hood ornament had been a Dodge motif since the 1930s — and was spun out as its own division in 2010, the argument being that truck buyers and car buyers want different things from a dealership. Ram now sits within Stellantis and, since 2023, within its Stellantis Pro One commercial vehicle division.

Ram was the vehicle that opened the modern Australian full-size pickup market, through a factory-backed remanufacturing programme that converts left-hand-drive trucks to right-hand drive locally rather than shipping them through independent converters. That matters when buying used: a factory-backed conversion carries full type approval and warranty support, and an independent one may not.
