Overview
Rimac is a Croatian electric hypercar maker that has become far more important as a supplier than as a carmaker. Its battery and powertrain systems are used by Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pininfarina, and it now runs Bugatti.
History
The origin story is unusually literal: Mate Rimac converted a 1984 BMW 3 Series to electric power in his garage at 19, in 2007, and set acceleration records with it. The company was founded in 2009 and is based at Sveta Nedelja near Zagreb.
The Concept One produced 960 kW and reached 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds; only eight were built. The Nevera, unveiled in 2018, claims 1.85 seconds to 60 mph with 150 planned. Porsche Engineering took 10 per cent in 2018 and later raised it to 24 per cent; Hyundai and Kia invested €80 million in 2019; and in July 2021 the Bugatti Rimac joint venture put the Croatian company in charge of the French marque.
