Overview
Rivian builds electric adventure vehicles — the R1T pickup and R1S SUV — designed around genuine off-road capability and outdoor use rather than urban commuting. It was the first company to deliver a fully electric pickup to customers.
History
RJ Scaringe founded the company in 2009 in Rockledge, Florida as Mainstream Motors, renaming it Avera and then Rivian in 2011. An early sports car prototype was shelved in late 2011 in favour of electric and autonomous vehicles.
In 2017 Rivian bought a former Mitsubishi plant at Normal, Illinois for $16 million. The R1T and R1S were revealed at the 2018 LA Auto Show, with R1T deliveries starting in October 2021. Amazon contracted for 100,000 electric delivery vans. The November 2021 IPO priced at $78 and closed its first day near a $100 billion valuation. Volkswagen Group committed $5 billion in 2024, and the more affordable R2 was scheduled for 2026.
