Overview

Rolls-Royce is the reference point for automotive luxury to the extent that the name works as an adjective in English. The current range — Phantom, Ghost, Cullinan and the electric Spectre — is built at Goodwood in West Sussex, and 2023 was the company’s best year ever at 6,032 cars.

History

Charles Rolls and Henry Royce founded the original company in 1906, and the Silver Ghost established a reputation for reliability and refinement that the marque has traded on ever since. The car business operated as part of Rolls-Royce Limited until 1973 and then as Rolls-Royce Motors.

The 1998 sale produced one of the strangest outcomes in corporate history. Volkswagen bought Rolls-Royce Motors for £430 million and got the factory, the Spirit of Ecstasy and Bentley — but not the name, which was owned by the aerospace company Rolls-Royce Holdings and licensed instead to BMW for £40 million. BMW’s Rolls-Royce Motor Cars began production at a new Goodwood plant in 2003.
