Overview

RUF is not a Porsche tuner, though almost everyone describes it as one. It is a recognised German manufacturer in its own right, building its own chassis and bodies and assigning its own vehicle identification numbers — the cars are RUFs, not modified 911s.

History

Alois Ruf Sr. founded Auto Ruf in 1939 as a service garage at Pfaffenhausen in Bavaria, adding a service station in 1949 and building buses in the 1950s. His 24-year-old son Alois Ruf Jr. took over in 1974 and redirected the business towards Porsche engineering, launching the first complete RUF model — a 3.3-litre 911 Turbo — in 1977.

The moment that made the name was 1987, when the CTR "Yellowbird" recorded 211 mph, beating the claimed top speed of the Ferrari F40, and then starred in a Nürburgring film that remains among the most watched pieces of car footage ever made. Current models include the CTR Anniversary, SCR and CTR3 Evo.
