Overview
Saleen is an American performance house best known for heavily reworked Mustangs, and for one entirely original car — the S7, a mid-engined supercar that won four GT championships in its first season.
History
Steve Saleen, a former Formula Atlantic driver, founded the company in 1983 at Corona, California. Modified Mustangs were the core business, later joined by F-150 trucks. In 2002 Saleen won the assembly and paint contract for the Ford GT, becoming a tier-one Ford supplier.
The S7 arrived in 2000 as the company’s only vehicle not based on an existing platform. Financial trouble followed from around 2014, the SEC revoked its registration in 2017, and a Chinese joint venture launched that year collapsed amid allegations that the local partner had embezzled state funds.
