Overview

Saturn was General Motors’ attempt to build a Japanese-style small-car company from scratch inside GM — "a different kind of car company" — with dent-resistant polymer body panels, no-haggle pricing, and a deliberately separate culture. It worked, briefly, and then stopped working when the separateness was taken away.

History

Established on 7 January 1985 with its own plant at Spring Hill, Tennessee. Sales peaked in 1994 at 286,003 vehicles, and the original S-Series generated genuine owner loyalty — Saturn ran homecoming events at the factory that thousands of customers attended.

The independence eroded through the 2000s, and Saturn ended up selling rebadged Opels — the Astra and the Sky. A sale to Penske Automotive collapsed in September 2009 when no manufacturer could be found to keep building the cars. GM ceased production on 7 October 2009 and closed the dealer network by 31 October 2010, almost exactly 25 years after the brand launched.
