Overview
SF Motors was the American arm of what is now Seres, the electric-vehicle business of the Chinese group Chongqing Sokon. The name matters because the company behind it has become one of the more significant players in Chinese electric vehicles, largely through its partnership with Huawei.
A vehicle carrying the SF Motors name is from the company’s early American period. The later and much larger volume sits under the Seres and AITO brands.
History
SF Motors Inc. was founded in Santa Clara, California in January 2016. Its parent, Sokon Industry Group, received a Chinese production permit for electric vehicles in January 2017, and SF Motors opened its Silicon Valley headquarters that March.
The pivot came in 2021 with a strategic partnership with Huawei, which leads the design of AITO models while Seres builds them. AITO was sold to Huawei in June 2023 and transferred back to Seres in July 2024. Since 2023 Seres has been positioned as the export brand while AITO and Landian serve the Chinese domestic market.
