Overview

Shelby is the name Carroll Shelby put on some of the most significant American performance cars ever built — the Cobra, the GT350 and GT500 Mustangs, and the Ford GT40 programme that broke Ferrari’s hold on Le Mans.

History

Carroll Shelby won Le Mans in 1959 and retired from driving on heart grounds, founding Shelby American in 1962. His idea was simple: put an American V8 into a light British sports car. AC Cars of Britain agreed, and 1,003 Cobras were built on the AC Ace body across the 260 and 289 variants.

Ford then hired him to make the Mustang credible as a performance car, producing 13,912 Shelby Mustangs between 1965 and 1970 — sales grew sixfold from 1966 to 1967 alone. He also ran Ford’s GT40 race programme, delivering first and second at Le Mans in 1966 and the manufacturers’ championship with it. A Chrysler period followed in the 1980s, producing 6,050 modified Dodges. Shelby American continues today from Nevada.
