Overview
Solectria was an early American electric vehicle company that came out of solar car racing and ended up supplying drivetrain components to the utilities and manufacturers experimenting with EVs in the 1990s.
History
James Worden founded Solectria in 1989 with Anita Rajan after graduating from MIT; the name came from the solar race cars he had been building since 1984, one of which set a 90 mph world speed record. The company made motor controllers, inverters and drivetrains, initially for solar racing teams.
Complete vehicles followed: the Force, a converted Geo Metro, in 1991; the 1,200 lb LightSpeed prototype in 1990; three Sunrise sedan prototypes in the mid-1990s; and the CitiVan in 1997. About 160 vehicles had been sold by 1995, covering over a million miles between them, mostly to utilities. After roughly 400 vehicles the company returned to components in 2001 and was acquired by Azure Dynamics in December 2004.
