Overview

Spyker built low-volume Dutch sports cars distinguished by exposed gear linkages, aviation-inspired detailing and turned-aluminium interiors. It is remembered as much for buying Saab as for its own cars.

History

The original Spyker was a Dutch carmaker and aviation firm active from 1880 to 1926, credited with the first six-cylinder engine and the first four-wheel-drive car. Victor Muller and Maarten de Bruijn revived the name in 1999, with C8 production from 2000.

Sales peaked at 94 cars in 2006, the year the company bought the Midland F1 team for $106.6 million and ran it as Spyker F1 in 2007 before selling it on to Vijay Mallya. In January 2010 Spyker bought Saab Automobile from General Motors for around $394 million; both companies stopped paying suppliers in early 2011 and Saab production halted that March. Spyker filed for restructuring in 2014 and for bankruptcy again in 2021.
