Overview
SsangYong is a Korean specialist in four-wheel drives and utes, and in Australia it competes almost entirely on price — the Musso ute in particular undercuts the mainstream utes substantially while offering comparable payload and towing. The company renamed itself KG Mobility in March 2023, but nearly every used example here wears the SsangYong badge.
History
The lineage begins with the Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop in 1954, which merged with Dongbang Motor to become Dong-A Motor in 1977 and then SsangYong Motor Company in 1988 after acquisition by the SsangYong Group. A technology partnership with Daimler-Benz from 1991 produced the Musso and influenced the Korando and Rexton — which is why some older SsangYongs run Mercedes-derived engines and transmissions.
Ownership has been unusually turbulent: Daewoo Motors from 1997, SAIC of China from 2004, Mahindra of India from 2011, and South Korea’s KG Group from 2022, with the KG Mobility rename following in March 2023.
Buying a used SsangYong
The value case is real, and so is the resale penalty — these depreciate faster than a HiLux or Ranger, which is exactly why they are worth looking at second-hand.
Check dealer and parts coverage for your area before buying, particularly given the ownership changes; support has been inconsistent across eras. Inspect a used Musso the way you would any working ute: towing evidence, underbody, rear suspension and a service history that actually exists.
