Overview
SSC North America is an American hypercar manufacturer whose entire reason for existing is top speed. Its Ultimate Aero held the production car record, and the Tuatara has been the subject of the most closely scrutinised speed-record dispute in recent memory.
History
Jerod Shelby — no relation to Carroll — founded Shelby SuperCars in 1998 at Richland, Washington. The first Ultimate Aero prototype was completed in 2004, and in 2007 the car averaged 256.18 mph over two runs to take the production car speed record. The company renamed itself SSC North America in 2012 after a settlement with the Carroll Shelby estate.
A 2020 Tuatara run in Nevada produced claims the company later retracted after independent analysis of the video. A verified run followed in 2021 at the Kennedy Space Center at 282.9 mph average, and in 2022 the car reached 295 mph one-way with independent GPS verification. Tuatara production is limited to 100 cars.
