Overview
Subaru has one of the most loyal followings in Australian motoring, built on two engineering signatures: symmetrical all-wheel drive as standard across almost the entire range, and horizontally opposed boxer engines that keep the centre of gravity low. The result is sure-footed handling in the wet, on gravel and on snow — a genuine advantage on Australian country roads.
The Outback and Forester are the workhorses, beloved by regional buyers for their ground clearance and composure, while the WRX carries the rally-bred performance torch.
History
Subaru was founded on 15 July 1953 as the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries, whose predecessor was the Nakajima Aircraft Company of 1915 — the Fuji Rabbit scooter of 1946 was built partly from surplus aircraft parts. The name is Japanese for the Pleiades star cluster, and the six stars in the badge represent the companies that merged to form FHI.
The first car, the Subaru 1500 of 1954, ran to just twenty units; the 360 of 1958 was the real start. The boxer engine arrived in 1965 and symmetrical all-wheel drive in 1972. World Rally Championship titles followed in 1995, 1996 and 1997, with Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg taking drivers’ crowns in Subarus. The company withdrew from the WRC in 2008.
Buying a used Subaru
Used Subarus hold their value strongly — stock scarcity is common — and the EyeSight safety suite has been standard on most models since the mid-2010s, so even older examples carry autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
Check for a complete service history, and on turbocharged WRX and STI models look hard for evidence of modification and track use. On older boxer engines, ask when the head gaskets were last attended to; it is a known wear item on some generations and worth confirming rather than assuming.
