Overview
TH!NK was a Norwegian electric car maker that was ahead of its time for two decades and went bankrupt four times proving it. Ford owned it briefly, before anyone believed there was a market.
History
Founded as PIVCO — Personal Independent Vehicle Company — in January 1991 at Bærum, Norway, building aluminium-chassis cars with polyethylene bodies. Ten of fifteen prototypes were ready for the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, and the PIV3 City Bee followed in 1995 with 120 units.
Ford acquired 51 per cent in 1999 and built 1,005 Ford TH!NK City cars before exiting in 2003; the TH!NK Neighbor, a neighbourhood electric vehicle, reached 7,162 units for the 2002 model year. Ownership passed to KamKorp and then InSpire, and a redesigned lithium-ion Th!nk City arrived in 2007 with 160 km of range. Roughly 2,500 vehicles were built in total. The final bankruptcy came on 22 June 2011 and manufacturing stopped entirely by August 2012.
