Overview
Triumph built affordable British sports cars — the TR series, the Spitfire, the GT6 — and is one of the marques that defined the open two-seater as a category. Note that Triumph Motorcycles is a separate business with a separate history; they share only an ancestor.
History
Siegfried Bettmann founded S. Bettmann & Co. in London in 1885 to import bicycles, adopting the Triumph trade name the following year and moving manufacturing to Coventry. The first Triumph car was built in 1923.
The Standard Motor Company bought Triumph in 1944, Leyland Motors acquired the combined business in 1960, and it was absorbed into British Leyland in 1968. The TR2, TR3, Spitfire, GT6 and Stag are the models enthusiasts remember. The last Triumph was the Acclaim of 1981 — a rebadged Honda Ballade — and the name disappeared over the summer of 1984 when the Rover 200 replaced it. BMW acquired the trademark with the Rover Group in 1994.
Buying a classic Triumph
These are rust-first purchases. On a TR6 or Spitfire, check the chassis rails, outriggers, sills and floors before you look at anything cosmetic, and be aware that a rotten chassis on a separate-chassis car is a far bigger job than shiny paint suggests.
Mechanical and body parts are extremely well supported by British specialists, and the enthusiast community here is active — join a club before you buy rather than after.
