Overview

Vector was America’s attempt at a homegrown answer to Lamborghini — aerospace construction, fighter-jet cockpit, extravagant top-speed claims. It built 31 cars across two models in more than a decade.

History

Gerald Wiegert founded Vehicle Design Force in 1971 and put the first Vector concept on the cover of Motor Trend in April 1972. The W2 concept appeared in 1978 with a running prototype by 1979; it covered over 100,000 miles, more than any concept car before or since, though Vector consistently declined to let anyone verify its 230 mph claim.

Vector Aeromotive began building the W8 in 1989; 17 were made. Andre Agassi’s pre-ordered car became a public embarrassment when Vector refunded his $455,000 after he drove it before it was finished. Indonesia’s MegaTech took control in 1993 and moved production to Jacksonville, Florida, producing 14 M12s with Lamborghini Diablo V12 power from 1995. Wiegert regained control and developed the WX-8 prototype before his death in January 2021.
