Overview
VinFast is Vietnam’s first globally ambitious carmaker, an electric-only brand backed by the country’s largest conglomerate. Its expansion has been rapid, heavily capitalised and repeatedly rescheduled.
History
Established in June 2017 as the automotive arm of Vingroup, founded by Phạm Nhật Vượng and based at Hải Phòng. The first models — the LUX A2.0 sedan and LUX SA2.0 SUV, unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show — used previous-generation BMW platforms and licensed engines. Production ran from 2019 until 2022, when the company switched to electric vehicles only.
First electric deliveries were VF e34 crossovers to Vietnamese customers in December 2021. VinFast listed on Nasdaq on 15 August 2023 via a SPAC merger. Overseas plants and market entries have been repeatedly delayed or cancelled, and the company has recorded losses every year since founding.
