Vintage Microbus re-manufactures the Volkswagen Type 2 — the split and bay-window Kombi. Its two registered models are the Kombi Transporter T2-R and the Kombi Camper T2-R, the R marking the rebuilt vehicle.
The Type 2 is one of the most heavily reproduced vehicles in the world, with almost every panel available new, which is what makes a full rebuild of a rusted-out example possible.
Buying one in Australia
Rust is the whole inspection. Even on a rebuilt Kombi, the areas that matter are structural — floor, outriggers, jacking points and the join between the front panel and the cab — and they are the areas a cosmetic restoration hides most easily.
Ask what proportion of the vehicle is new metal and whether the chassis number is the original one. If the answer is a substantial rebuild, expect the registration and engineering paperwork to reflect it.
