Overview
Vision Industries, of Long Beach, California, developed hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrains for heavy trucks and terminal tractors. Its vehicle was the Tyrano, an 80,000 pound Class 8 truck running a hydrogen fuel cell alongside plug-in hybrid batteries.
The Tyrano was aimed at drayage operators working the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where short, repetitive, heavily polluting routes made the economics of a zero-emission truck work earlier than they did anywhere else.
History
The prototype debuted in 2011 and was presented as the world’s first plug-in electric and hydrogen fuel-cell Class 8 vehicle. It used compressed hydrogen, with a standard range of about 200 miles on a single side-mounted tank and roughly 400 miles with a second tank fitted.
Hydrogenics supplied HyPM 16 fuel cell modules under contract, and Vision entered a partnership with FedEx to retrofit and trial a truck over a year. The company did not reach volume production, so the Tyrano remains a demonstration and pilot vehicle rather than a fleet one.
