Overview
Volkswagen brought European driving polish to the Australian mainstream. The Golf remains the benchmark small car for ride and refinement, the Tiguan and T-Roc translate that maturity into family SUVs, and the Amarok gives the brand a genuine foothold in the ute market. Across the range you get solid-feeling cabins, punchy turbocharged engines and highway manners that shrink long Australian distances.
The Golf GTI deserves its icon status: nearly five decades of hot-hatch pedigree distilled into a car that is fast, practical and easy to live with every day.
History
Volkswagen was established on 28 May 1937 by the German Labour Front to build a "people’s car" designed by Ferdinand Porsche, at a purpose-built factory town now called Wolfsburg. Prototypes appeared in 1938 and civilian production was halted by the war. The company has acknowledged using 15,000 slave labourers in that period, and historians put the share of forced labour in its wartime workforce far higher.
A British Army officer, Ivan Hirst, restarted production in 1945. The Beetle passed one million sales in 1955 and overtook the Ford Model T’s all-time production record on 17 February 1972, eventually exceeding 16 million cars. The Golf replaced it as the core product in 1974. In 2015 the Dieselgate emissions scandal revealed that VW had cheated emissions tests, with affected cars emitting up to 40 times the permitted NOx in real driving; a $14.7 billion US settlement followed in June 2016, and the company pivoted hard to electric vehicles with the ID range.
Buying a used Volkswagen
Favour cars with complete service records. The DSG dual-clutch transmissions and turbocharged engines are reliable when maintained on schedule, and VW’s capped-price servicing has kept histories honest on newer cars. A DSG service is a real, scheduled item — check it has been done.
Used GTIs are plentiful in Australia and hold their value well, with the Mk7.5 and Mk8 generations offering the best blend of performance and technology for the money. A well-kept Volkswagen feels a class above its price.
