Overview
Volvo has organised its entire engineering identity around one idea for nearly a century: that the people inside the car matter more than anything else about it. That is not marketing — the company gave away its most valuable patent because keeping it would have cost lives.
The current range is the XC40, XC60 and XC90 SUVs plus their electric EX equivalents, and the brand has committed to a fully electric future.
History
Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson founded Volvo in Gothenburg in 1927. The name is Latin for "I roll". The founding principle — "cars are driven by people; the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety" — has been quoted internally ever since.
The list of firsts is the company’s real legacy: the modern three-point seatbelt, invented by Nils Bohlin in 1959 and released to every competitor patent-free; the first rear-facing child seat in 1964; the booster seat in 1978; the Side Impact Protection System in 1991; and side airbags as standard equipment in 1994–95. Ford owned Volvo Cars from 1999 to 2010, when Geely bought it for $1.8 billion; the company listed on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2021 with Geely retaining a majority.
Buying a used Volvo
Volvos depreciate faster than their German equivalents while offering comparable safety equipment, which makes a three-to-five-year-old XC60 or XC90 one of the better value propositions in the premium SUV market.
Service history is the usual requirement. The dealer network in Australia is smaller than the mainstream brands, so check what support exists in your area before buying, particularly for the plug-in hybrid Recharge models.
